– The parents of two Irish backpackers seriously injured in a shocking attack have arrived in Melbourne to be at their bedsides.
David Greene and David Byas, both of Dublin, had been on the trip of a lifetime when they were allegedly bashed in their St Kilda East hostel at the weekend.
Luke James Wentholt, 31, has faced court over the alleged attack in the Lynedoch Avenue property at 1am on Sunday.
The victims, one aged 28 and the other 30, suffered severe upper body injuries and were left fighting for life at The Alfred Hospital.
One man was listed as serious but stable last night while the other remained in a critical condition.
The Homicide Squad has been brought in to assist detectives with the case.
The hostel remained empty yesterday as police continued their investigation. It is believed up to 11 people, mostly international backpackers, were inside the boarding house when Mr Wentholt allegedly went berzerk.
A police source said earlier reports that the men had been bludgeoned with a hammer were incorrect.
”(The accused ) has apparently used the hammer to smash in some walls, but the victims had been bashed with hands and feet,” he claimed.
Irish newspaper the “Belfast Telegraph” reported that while two men had not initially been travelling together, they knew each other, having grown up close to each other in Dublin’s south.
Images of Mr Greene from his Facebook page show him enjoying the Australian countryside from Fremantle to Melbourne.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing assistance to the men and their families through the Irish embassy in Canberra.
Mr Wentholt, of St Kilda East, faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was charged with two counts each of intentionally causing serious injury and recklessly causing serious injury.
He was remanded in custody to face the same court on October 8th – Wayne Flower
