– A prison conman who posed as an undercover cop and secret agent to trick a fellow prisoner into having sex with him could face up to 10 years’ jail.
Benjamin Lord’s elaborate hoax fooled his victim into thinking he was one of the country’s most powerful men who rubbed shoulders with Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Kevin Rudd and former top cop Simon Overland.
Lord convinced his victim he was an AFP officer and an ASIO agent who could help him get out of jail because of his influence over the Parole Board and a friendship with County Court Chief Judge Michael Rozenes.
Lord told his victim, who cannot be named, engaging in sexual acts with him would boost his chance of parole.
At the County Court yesterday Lord pleaded guilty to four charges including two of impersonating a public official with the intention of obtaining sexual services.
He also pleaded guilty to two further deception charges.
The court heard Lord designed fake uniforms, security passes and documents to support his elaborate hoax.
Prosecutor Michelle Sewell told the court Lord often wrote reports and claimed to be making calls to court officials from inside his prison cell.
The court heard Lord regularly told his victim he was under arrest and ordered him to strip before conducting cavity searches on him.
The pair regularly engaged in sexual activity inside the prison, the court heard.
After being released from prison Lord told his victim he had left the AFP and joined ASIO as a secret agent who worked with the CIA.
He claimed the move had been forced after his victim’s stepfather made inquiries that revealed that Lord was a fake.
He continued to visit his victim in prison, on one occasion carrying an imitation ASIO identity card and wearing a fake ASIO uniform.
Judge Julie Nicholson adjourned the plea hearing until tomorrow – Shannon Deery
