– Former Labor MP Craig Thomson will face court in Melbourne after being arrested on 149 fraud charges – including allegations he used his union credit card to pay for prostitutes.
In a devastating blow to Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s day-old election campaign, Mr Thomson was arrested by detectives at his electorate office in Sydney and faced court on a charge of misusing a credit card in a $330 transaction. The charge follows a Victoria Police fraud investigation into the finances of the Health Services Union, of which Mr Thomson was a former national secretary.
Mr Thomson was bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on February 6th. His bail conditions include that he not make contact with anyone he is alleged to have engaged for sexual services.
Speaking after his court appearance, the former Labor rising star denied any wrongdoing and said he would vigorously defend the charges against him.
