– Police are investigating whether bikies are linked to the shooting of a man in Melbourne’s inner north.
Up to nine shots were fired, with two bullets wounding a 30-year-old man who was with his girlfriend when confronted by two carloads of men outside serviced apartments in Smithfield Road, Kensington, at 3:55am yesterday.
There were frantic calls to 000 following the shooting.
The victim had been a person of interest to the Santiago Taskforce, which was set up in 2008 in the wake of shootings involving Middle Eastern families based in Melbourne’s North-west.
The taskforce’s Detective Senior Sergeant Everett Moutsidis said detectives were yet to establish if there were any links to outlaw bikies.
The woman, who was not injured, drove the man to hospital, where he remained in a stable condition.
Neither are cooperating with police inquiries.
It is not known if the victim was armed or if more than one gun was fired.
CCTV is being reviewed, and Senior Sergeant Moutsidis has called on anyone who witnessed dark-coloured sedans leaving the scene to contact police – Anthony Dowsley
