REMAND FOR SHOP OWNER – Wednesday April 3 2013

– A Melbourne classic car shop owner who allegedly shot dead a man in what police described as a botched robbery is in jail after being remanded in custody yesterday.
Ivan Joe D’Angelo, 37, sat in the dock, unshaven, wearing a white shirt and black jeans at the Melbourne Magistrates Court charged with one count of murder.
The Herald Sun can reveal the dead man was 26-year-old Wade Vandenberg.
He was killed at Mr D’Angelo’s workshop in the city’s north last Thursday.
Mr D’Angelo, of Reservoir, did not apply for bail yesterday because Deputy Chief Magistrate Jelena Popovic did not have the power to hear the application. It is unknown if he will apply for bail in the Supreme Court.
He was supported in court by two family members and remanded in custody until July.
His lawyer, James Dowsley told the court it was Mr D’Angelo’s first time in custody.
Last week, Detective Inspector John Potter said police had been provided with an account of the shooting by Mr D’Angelo that indicated it might have been a burglary gone wrong.
He had told police he was sleeping at his Thomastown premises after working late when he was disturbed by three men about 2:35am.
Mr Vandenberg was allegedly fatally shot, and it is believed two others – one possibly seriously injured – fled the scene.
Victoria Police could not confirm yesterday whether the other two people allegedly involved in the incident had been spoken to.
But police did confirm there were no further updates and the matter was still being investigated.
In an obituary, Mr Vandenberg’s sister, Richelle, said: “I never thought the day would come when I would have to say goodbye”.
His mother described Mr Vandenberg as the man of the house who was kind and had a beaming smile – Meagan Dillon
