POLICE TARGET SRI LANKAN BUSINESSMAN OVER DOUBLE MURDER CASE – Monday March 25 2013

– Homicide detectives are yet to track down a Sri Lankan businessman whom they believe holds the key to unlocking a decade-old murder mystery.

Nihal York has been on the run for at least three years and is wanted for questioning over the assassination of a Hungarian immigrant and his Thai partner at a farmhouse north of Melbourne in October 2003.

Steve Gulyas and his partner of 10 years, Tina ‘Bing’ Nhonthachith, were each shot three times in the head.

On the eve of the killing, Ms Nhonthachith rang a workmate, a Thai woman known as Superporn, complaining about a man lingering by the property.

It was long thought the deaths were tied to Melbourne’s gangland war or linked to the sex trade.

But Detective Inspector John Potter told Fairfax Media this week he no longer believed illicit prostitution was involved in the killings, while a gangland hit was ruled out about five years ago.

Mr York has been a person of interest to homicide detectives for several years.

A $200,000 reward is on offer to solve the case – Jared Lynch
