– A man charged with murdering a Ballarat mum while her young son was in the home had been in a brief relationship with the woman, it has been revealed.
Speaking outside court after a short hearing for accused man Jason John Dinsley, defence lawyer Jon Irwin said yesterday Mr Dinsley moved to the Ballarat district only about six weeks who for a fresh start.
Mr Dinsley, 29, of Sebastapol, is accused of fatally bashing Sharon Denise Siermans, who was separated from her former partner.
According to Mr Irwin, Mr Dinsley and Ms Siermans had recently been in a very short relationship but had not seen each other for about four weeks.
Mr Dinsley appeared in Ballarat Magistrates Court for a five-minute directions hearing after Homicide Squad detectives charged him on Monday night.
A group of Ms Siermans’ grieving relatives faced the charged man in court.
One man appeared to restrain a woman and prevent her from approaching Mr Dinsley in the dock during the hearing.
It is alleged Mr Dinsley bashed Ms Siermans inside her Doveton Street South home between 8:30pm on Friday and 10:40am Saturday. The court heard that her four-year-old son was there at the time.
The little boy remained in the house until relatives found him on the Saturday morning.
On Monday, Homicide Squad boss Detective Inspector John Potter said Ms Siermans was likely assaulted to the head and body with some sort of blunt force trauma item.
Outside court yesterday, Mr Irwin described Ms Siermans’ death as a tragedy that left a boy without a mother and a family without a daughter.
Mr Dinsley was remanded in custody and will reappear in court for a committal mention on August 15th.
