– Police have arrested Bandidos boss Toby Mitchell and another member of the bikie gang in a dramatic interception on a South Melbourne street.
Police confirmed that a 38-year-old Docklands man and a 32-year-old Reservoir man were arrested after a man was allegedly assaulted on Clarendon Street.
Both were released without charge, pending further investigations.
A witness told 3AW that armed plain-clothes police stopped a black sedan at the corner of Cecil and York Streets, across the road from the South Melbourne Market, and ordered the occupants onto the road.
Another witness, who did not want to be named, said it was an incredibly tense and dramatic scene. “I was eating lunch and heard this yelling, turned around and there were over 10 plain-clothed police all pointing guns at the suspects’ vehicle,” she said.
“It took some time before they got them out and I thought there was going to be a shootout. Unmarked police cars came from nowhere and blocked the streets”.
David Zuegn saw one of the arrests. He said it appeared police planned the operation, with police cars appearing from every entry into the intersection of York and Cecil Streets.
Mr Zuegn Saif there were about six or seven uniformed police and another seven or eight plain-clothed officers. “It looked pretty planned,” he said.
“They told the guy to get out and basically ripped him out of the car, put him on the ground and handcuffed him.
“They then went through the car, went through the boot and just let him sit there for a while.”
Mitchell has survived two attempts on his life in recent years. In November 2011, the former kickboxer nearly died after he was shot five times outside Doherty’s Gym in Brunswick – Dan Oakes & Jared Lynch
