– Three motorists have been praised for their bravery and quick thinking after they helped detain a man wanted for a string of carjackings across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.
A 39-year-old Keilor East man driving an allegedly stolen car hit another vehicle at the corner of Power Street and Barkers Road, Hawthorn, about 11:40am on Saturday. Police said he then threatened a family with a broomstick in an apparent attempt to steal their car.
Two witnesses jumped out of their cars to restrain him as he was allegedly hitting the driver, before the three of them sat on him until police arrived.
During the arrest, police said the man struck a 25-year-old officer from Camberwell. Paramedics treated her at the scene for head injuries.
The man was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital, where he will stay under police guard until being questioned.
Police allege the man was affected by drugs, and was responsible for three carjackings in the eastern suburbs earlier in the day.
The first incident was at the corner of Elgar and Whitehorse Roads at Box Hill about 11:30am.
After being involved in a series of collisions along Whitehorse Road, the man’s car became inoperable and he left it at the intersection.
The man then approached another male, aged in his 50s, who was sitting inside a nearby vehicle. Police allege the man assaulted the driver by punching him through the window of the car before finally pulling him out.
After stealing the driver’s car, the alleged offender headed west, side-swiping a taxi on the corner of Cotham and Burke Roads, Kew.
The man continued to drive before ploughing into a four-wheel-drive at the corner of Power Street and Barkers Road. Sergeant Daniel Hickey of Camberwell police said the driver fled the crash and ran into a nearby driveway on Denmark Street.
“He then attempted to break into one of the cars banked up at the scene, shouting, ‘Get out of the car!’ And whacking the driver with a broomstick,” Sergeant Hickey said.
“Three civilians whacked him down and kept him there until we arrived.”
Whitehorse Detective Senior Sergeant Leanne Trusler praised the actions as “very brave” – Nick Toscano

Deep connections are the most important aspect of my existence. I don’t care if people don’t know what they want. I love books. I’m cynical of love stories, although I’m romantic. I adore gardens. I like women who challenge me. I love the rain as an excuse to stay inside and dream. I'm furiously impatient. If I ask you a question best to tell me the truth as I'm likely to already know the answer. I'm a carnivore. I continuously underestimate the magic of fresh flowers in my home. I’ve run my own company since 1991. Bright lights, big cities. I’ve been an executive producer of a feature film. Some people don’t care, and that’s the biggest let-down of the human race. There are cures and solutions for many evils, but no remedy for the worst of them all - the apathy of human beings. The sound of the Italian language being spoken is as good as my favourite music. I hate corrupt cops. I relentlessly and passionately pursue anybody and anything that sets my soul on fire. I'm a dog lover, and all my dogs are considered family members. I have an obsession with photography. I have some close friends who are household names, but shall always remain anonymous. I’m crazy but not lazy. Losing a soulmate has hurt me badly. My two young sons are the nucleus of my universe. I love airports. I love freedom. If you are dishonest or disloyal, I can erase you from my life and memory immediately and permanently.
