– A Melbourne airport security worker has been questioned by the Australian Federal Police as part of an investigation into alleged drug importations.
The 33-year-old Avondale Heights man works for a private security contractor in the international terminal’s baggage screening area. It is understood that at least one other of the man’s airport security colleagues may also be under police scrutiny.
An AFP spokeswoman confirmed on Thursday afternoon that the man was “assisting police with inquiries relating to an ongoing criminal investigation”.
“The AFP can confirm the man is working as a private security contractor at Melbourne airport. No arrests have been made at this stage,” the spokeswoman said.
News of the criminal investigation involving Melbourne airport comes after Fairfax Media last December revealed a cell of allegedly corrupt customs officers at Sydney airport. Four customs officers, a Australian Quarantine Inspection Service member and a Sydney airport baggage handler have been charged in connection with an international drug-trafficking syndicate and alleged bribery – Richard Baker & Nick McKenzie
