– James “Whitey” Bulger, the Boston mobster, strangled his accomplice’s stepdaughter before going upstairs for his customary post-murder nap, a court has been told.
Several members of the jury looked shaken as Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi, who is serving life sentences for 10 murders, incriminated Bulger in a series of gruesome killings.
Particularly harrowing was Flemmi’s account of the death of Deborah Hussey, his stepdaughter, who he said worked as a prostitute to pay for her drug habit. He testified that he drove Ms Hussey, 26, to a house where Bulger was waiting and watched as he strangled her. Flemmi then pulled the teeth from her skull with pliers and buried her beneath a dirt floor cellar next to two other alleged Bulger victims.
He said that he agreed with Bulger that Ms Hussey had to be killed because she had become a “problem” for their Winter Hill gang.
But in a chilling effort to add an element of humanity to his actions, he said that he made sure the young woman did not know her fate. “I took her shopping,” Flemmi said. “She wasn’t aware she was going to be killed.”
Flemmi said the two men then followed their normal post-killing routine: Bulger went upstairs for a nap, while he buried the body.
Bulger, 83, is charged with involvement in 19 murders in a federal racketeering indictment that also accuses him of extortion, money laundering and illegal gun possession. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, although his lawyer has acknowledged that his client was a drug dealer, extortionist and “organised criminal”. He fled Boston in 1994 and for 17 years he was one of America’s most wanted fugitives until he was captured with his girlfriend in Santa Monica, California.
There were two women among Bulger’s alleged victims, Ms Hussey and Debra Davis, also 26. Flemmi previously told the court Bulger strangled Ms Davis, who was Flemmi’s girlfriend, because she learnt they were FBI informants. Bulger denies he was an informant, but Flemmi said the two men provided regular information to federal agents about other mobsters. Under cross-examination by Hank Brennan, defending, Flemmi rejected evidence in previous trials that he, and not Bulger, killed Ms Hussey. Brennan showed a photograph of Ms Hussey’s skull, with spaces where her teeth had been.
Flemmi admitted removing the teeth with pliers in an attempt to prevent her body being identified. He alleged that the pliers were given to Bulger by his girlfriend, Catherine Greig, a dental hygienist, who is now serving an eight-year jail term for helping him to evade capture – Philip Sherwell
