DETECTIVE FEARS FOR HIS SAFETY

Saturday August 31 2013

– A homicide detective who says he was assaulted by jockey Danny Nikolic says the incident arose while he gathered intelligence in a murder investigation.
Detective Senior Constable Julio Salerno told Melbourne Magistrates Court he had been asked to attend an interview with Nikolic by his superiors in the homicide squad.
He said the assault occurred after Nikolic took a step towards him that caused him to fear for his safety. A verbal altercation had ensued before the officer had pushed Nikolic back into his seat. Nikolic had immediately bounced back to his feet and they stood with foreheads touching.
Nikolic has denied charges of assaulting both the police officer and a fellow jockey.
The hearing is continuing.
