– A body was found in a laneway in south-east Melbourne on Tuesday.
A passer-by discovered the dead man in a lane off Inkerman Street in St Kilda East about 6:30am.
The body was located between two modern apartment buildings. The walkway is less than three metres wide and almost opposite Henryville Street.
Leading Senior Constable Lee Thompson said homicide squad detectives attended the scene but the cause of death was yet to be established. Locals said homeless people had recently started sleeping in the gap between the buildings, which had a small undercover area.
“I walk this way every day, and there’s been a lot of homeless people sleeping in there,” one woman said.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, human remains were found in a burnt out caravan at a camping ground in Glenaire. Campers called emergency services just before 6pm on Monday after they noticed the fire. Police were not the treating the fire as suspicious.
