– Using bogus bills, a counterfeit-cash couple has scammed retail establishments the past month along the Palm Bay Road corridor, West Melbourne Police Lt. Rich Cordeau said.
“They’re using real bills, and they’re washing them. For example, they’re changing a $5 into a $100,” Cordeau said.
West Melbourne police distributed video-surveillance photos of both unidentified suspects this week via Facebook and Twitter. Cordeau declined to disclose how many counterfeit-cash thefts have occurred or the exact locations, citing the ongoing investigation.
“Our detective is working with detectives from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and Indian River County Sheriff’s Office,” Cordeau said.
“We have several leads that we’re following up on. At this point, we don’t have anything solid,” he said this afternoon.
“We would ask retailers to check watermarks on the bills. (Also), there’s different presidents on a $100 versus a $5,” he said.
West Melbourne police ask anyone with information to call Detective Jason Campbell at 321-723-9673.
