– Detectives investigating a shooting in Sheffield which left one man dead and another injured say it may have been a ‘targeted attack’.
They have also revealed that the shooting on Derek Dooley Way was carried out as the victims were sat in a car at traffic lights waiting to pull onto The Parkway.
It has emerged that the victims were in a silver Ford Mondeo when a gunman opened fire at their vehicle.
The passenger, aged 22, was killed but the driver, a 28-year-old man, survived and remains in hospital in a stable condition.
No arrests have been made.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Etheridge, who is leading the murder investigation, said: “From the information we currently have we believe there is a possibility this was a targeted attack against the two victims, however it is too early in the investigation to confirm at this stage.
“Enquiries are ongoing at this time and officers will remain in the area today to provide reassurance to people living in and visiting Sheffield.
“I’d like to appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or anyone who has information, to please come forward and contact police.”
Formal identification of the dead man has not yet taken place.
A post-mortem examination is planned.
Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting incident number 1,090 of December 21.
