THIEVES who stole a BMW and more than $20,000 worth of jewellery left most of it behind as they fled from the police after a pursuit.
Detective Sergeant Duncan Frame said hooded offenders broke into an unoccupied house on Rippleside Dr, Torquay on Thursday night.
They raided the home and took a large amount of watches and jewellery.
While the exact value is not yet known, Det Sgt Frame said it was likely to be in excess of $20,000.
They then took off in the occupant’s BMW.
“A BMW was stolen which was later involved in a pursuit in Lara,” Det Sgt Frame said.
“It was recovered but the offenders got away … they had their hoodies on and the guys didn’t see them.”
The thieves left most of the stolen property in the car, and police are still working to determine what is yet to be recovered.
It was the second residential burglary on the Surf Coast overnight, with a house on Horsehoebend Rd, Torquay also broken into.
